Although it has proven controversial, the AFI (American Film Institute) Top 100 Greatest American Movies list seems to be generating a lot of ideas for Friday Night Movies lately. Just this past year, we've shown four movies on the list: #12. SUNSET BOULEVARD (1950) #14. SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959) #18. PSYCHO (1960) #40. NORTH BY NORTHWEST (1959) So to continue the trend, next up, I'm showing movie number 20! Best of all, it features Star Trek Deep Space 9's Kai Winn in her Oscar-winning performance! (It's also timely considering the now-playing "Girl, Interrupted" which I recommend seeing.) *RSVP*!!! Due to limited seating capacity, attendance may have to be limited to the earliest respondees. ********************************************************************** The next presentation at Kevin's Friday Night Movies Friday, February 18th, cartoon shorts to start promptly @ 8:00pm *** ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST *** One flew east... Awards: #20 of AFI's Top 100 Greatest American Movies * Won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor (Nicholson), Best Actress (Fletcher), Best Director, and Best Screenplay! * Won Golden Globes for (redundantly) Best Picture, Best Actor (Nicholson), Best Actress (Fletcher), Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture (Brad Dourif) * Won Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards, National Society of Film Critics Awards, New York Film Critics Circle Awards, etc., etc... Memorable Quotes: McMurphy: Which one of you nuts has got any guts? McMurphy: I must be crazy to be in a looney bin like this. McMurphy: What do you think you are, for Chrissake, crazy or somethin'? Well you're not! You're not! You're no crazier than the average asshole out walkin' around on the streets and that's it. Trivia: The role of McMurphy was originally offered to James Caan. This story was based on author Ken Kesey's experiences while working at Agnew correctional facility in San Jose, CA. There is a rumor that Jack Nicholson disappeared two months before filming started. Supposedly, when the crew arrived at the mental hospital to start filming, they discovered that he had admitted himself as a patient, and had been living there since disappearing. Many extras were authentic mental patients. Film debuts of Brad Dourif (who received a "Best Supporting Actor" Academy Award nomination), Christopher Lloyd and Will Sampson, as well as Tim McCall (a former governor of Oregon) and Dr. Dean R. Brooks, superintendent of the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, the film's main shooting location. Goofs: Continuity: Watch McMurphy's hat when he's strangling Nurse Ratched. Hope to see you there. I'll save you some thorazine!
