"Scaling the Cliffs of Insanity, battling Rodents of Unusual Size, facing torture in the Pit of Despair. True love has never been a snap." - original tagline

Return to a time when men were men and swamps were swamps. Fire Swamps, that is. Full of quicksand and Rodents of Unusual Size. Lagoons were inhabited by shrieking eels. And the most beautiful woman in the world was named...Buttercup? Well, it's a bent fairy tale. Complete with all the fencing, fighting, chases, escapes and silly accents you'd expect. Plus one or two things only director Rob Reiner could dream up. Like Inigo Montoya (Mandy Patinkin), who has dreamt his whole life of finding the six-fingered man who killed his father. Wrestling star Andre the Giant as his enormous sidekick. And In scenes that are pure show biz bliss, Billy Crystal as the kvetching miracle man, Max. Blonde Buttercup loves Wesley, a poor stable boy. But when he's captured by pirates, she's chosen evil Prince Humperdinck to be his princess bride.

Hope to see you there. I'll save you an aisle seat and a cocktail of unusual size!

Have fun stormin' da castle!

Awards

Nominated for Oscar for Best Song: Storybook Love by Willy DeVille, Won Saturn Award (Academy of Science Fiction, Horror and Fantasy Films) for Best Fantasy Film

Memorable Quotes

Inigo Montoya: Are you the Miracle Max who worked for the king all those years?
Miracle Max: The King's stinking son fired me, and thank you so much for bringing up such a painful subject. While you're at it, why don't you give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it? We're closed!

[Rugen has invited Humperdinck to watch Westley being tortured]
Prince Humperdinck: You know how much I love watching you work. But I've got my country's 500th anniversary to plan, my wedding to arrange, my wife to murder, and Guilder to frame for it. I'm swamped!

Westley: There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours.

Vizzini: HE DIDN'T FALL? INCONCEIVABLE!
Inigo Montoya: You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Miracle Max: You rush a miracle man, you get rotten miracles.

Trivia

Writer William Goldman says he got the idea for this book when he asked his two daughters what he should write about next; one daughter said "princesses" and the other shouted "brides."

Mark Knopfler agreed to write the music for this movie on the condition that Rob Reiner put the hat that he wore in This Is Spinal Tap (1984) in the movie. It can be seen hanging in the kid's bedroom.

Goofs

Revealing mistakes: When Inigo, Vizinni, and Fezzik kidnap Buttercup in the woods, Inigo is obviously a cardboard cut-out, as the fact that he looks very one-dimensional and he does not move, and also appears very fake.

Continuity: The dust on the Man In Black's clothes shifts constantly throughout the duel with Inigo.

Continuity: Count Rugen hits Westley on the left side of his head, towards the middle, to knock him out before sending him to the Pit of Despair. In the Pit, the bump on his head is on the right side of his forehead.
